Additional Funding

The school receives additional funding for the following:

  • Pupil Premium
  • Sports and PE
  • Covid-related catch up (including School-led tutoring, recovery premium and catch-up premium)

Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium is a grant given to school based on the number of children on roll who are eligible for free school meals or who have been eligible for free school meals in the past six years. Pupil premium is funding to improve education outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in schools in England. Evidence shows that disadvantaged children generally face additional challenges in reaching their potential at school and often do not perform as well as other pupils. The DfE guidance states that School leaders are best placed to assess their pupils’ needs and use the funding to improve attainment, drawing on evidence of effective practice. Pupil premium is not a personal budget for individual pupils and schools are not required to spend all of the allocated grant on eligible pupils.

Evidence suggests that pupil premium spending is most effective when used across 3 areas.

  1. High-quality teaching, such as staff professional development.
  2. Targeted academic support, such as tutoring.
  3. Wider strategies to address non-academic barriers to success in schools, such as attendance, behaviour and social and emotional support.

PE

PE & Sports Grant

The Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines recommend 60 minutes of physical exercise per day for children and young people, of which 30 minutes should be delivered within the school day-equating to 2 and a half hours per week. At Walton Priory children receive 3 hours of taught physical exercise per week, through National Curriculum PE and Competitive Sports.

The DfE supports this through the PE and sports premium grant which is designed to:

  • Develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport that a school provides
  • Build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now are sustainable and will benefit pupils joining the school in future years
