Music Assessment

Formative

At Walton Priory Middle School, we prioritize continuous and personalized feedback to support every student’s musical journey. During practical sessions, pupils receive immediate, in-the-moment verbal feedback to refine their musical skills and techniques.

Each lesson includes structured opportunities for learning checks, recap activities, and self-reflection through starter and plenary activities. This ensures that any misunderstandings or misconceptions are promptly identified and addressed through targeted reteaching.

Following key tasks and assessments, pupils engage in an improvement phase, where they receive focused feedback and have the opportunity to refine their work. This approach fosters a growth mindset and encourages a culture of continuous progress, empowering our students to reach new levels of musical excellence.

Summative

At both key stages, we assess students’ understanding through two core assessments per unit. These evaluations measure both substantive knowledge (technical skills, music theory, and practical application) and disciplinary knowledge (creative processes and expressive qualities in performance and composition). Where possible, practical assessments are recorded to track development over time.

These marks, combined with judgments based on classwork, provide a holistic view of each pupil’s musical journey. We use this data to monitor progress at three key points throughout the year, ensuring that we capture growth across the technical, constructive, and expressive elements of music.
