PE

At WPMS our vision is to provide the best opportunities for our children, to experience, enjoy and excel in high quality physical education and competitive sports. Our aim is to ensure pupils develop lifelong learning through a diverse and structured curriculum with strong links to our core values of working hard, respecting each other and looking after the environment. Pupils participate in a broad range of physically demanding activities which develop curiosity to explore out of school opportunities. We want our pupils to leave us with a love for sport and improved resilience changing their thought process from ‘I can’t’ to ‘How can I achieve it?’.

PE Learning Journey

Learning Journey & Subject Handbook

All students, whatever their ability or circumstance, will actively participate in and enjoy high quality PE, competitive sports and extra-curricular sports clubs.

PE and competitive sports will develop the fundamental skills associated with physical literacy leading to the acquisition of a range of skills and techniques which students can select, apply and adapt in different contexts.

The variety of sports and activities taught, will reflect the range and content of the National PE curriculum to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives

Students will be encouraged to take on roles of responsibility in PE lessons and school clubs and in year 8 have the opportunity to develop as sports leaders.

We have a dedicated team of PE teachers working at WPMS and we offer 3 hours of PE a week which is above the national requirement. The PE department offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities including lunchtime and after school clubs and attend many sporting fixtures, competitions and tournaments during the academic year. This allows students more time to practise, extend and refine their knowledge and skills.

Assessment

Students are assessed through formative assessment on their knowledge, skill and application of a particular sport at various points throughout the academic year. This is important for the student as it provides them with constructive feedback, allows us to assess future learning needs and determines their strengths and weaknesses in a particular sport. Students also use peer/self assessment with each other to determine their ability of a particular sport or game.
