Culture

At Walton Priory we ensure that children have an awareness of their own and other cultures through:

  • Trips and visits
  • Welcoming guest speakers
  • Competitions and fixtures
  • Our library
  • Enrichment activities at lunchtime or after school
  • As well as by promoting a varied and well considered curriculum

Trips and Visits

All children participate in day visits to places such as Warwick Castle or The Imperial War Museum. Additional visits are offered when we have links with organisations especially those relating to STEAM. For example, there are often working visits to JCB or RAF Cosford to promote careers and diversity. We offer a residential in Years 6, 7 and 8.

Guest Speakers

In the fields of RE and RSE especially, we welcome visitors who can promote real-life discussion about different faiths and cultures.

Our Library

Walton Priory has a library full of lovely books to suit all readers’ interests. We have a full time librarian who is on top of all the latest publications and who can recommend books to engage our pupils. Our library also features non-fiction books to enable children to research topics for independent study or homework. The school subscribes to a number of journals including ‘First News’, a weekly children’s newspaper, and ‘Aquila’, a magazine for “brilliant minds”. Children can loan books regularly and read at home as well as in the library at lunchtime.

Competitions and Fixtures

Our pupils mix with others in both local and national competitions. Prior to the pandemic, children at Walton Priory competed against other schools in Stone in Rotary Challenges. They also participate in Staffordshire geography quizzes and STEAM competitions. Sporting fixtures are regular thanks to our new minibus and we participate in home and away sporting fixtures in athletics, football, cricket and basketball.

Enrichment activities

The school offers activities on every lunchtime and most after school days (not on staff meeting day!). Clubs range from cricket to tennis and Japanese to chess.
